My family has gone to this restaurant for nearly 20 years. The wait staff is always friendly, the food amazing, and they always bring out more than you can eat. I can't think of a single place in the Des Moines area I'd prefer to have dinner. I've had the ground sirloin, chicken parmesan, eggplant parmesan, veal parmesan, cavatelli, Italian fried chicken, prime rib, and liver and onions. Every one of this is superb, but the chicken parm carries my highest recommendation. Most meals come with a salad, a side of spaghetti, a choice of potato, soup if they have it that night, and a basket of bread. The only exception seems to be pasta dishes, where they omit the spaghetti. I'd also recommend the onion rings as an appetizer. They're shoe-string style, and they're always fantastic. The owner is a grump, but she only seats you and collects the bill, so don't worry about her one bit. If you get the chance, ask to have Peggy as a server. Get her talking, and she's a hoot.

I would go back for the following: Onion rings, homemade Italian & pam dressing and the chicken parmesan my sister got. Oh and the hot bread was also delicious. I would not go back for the following: The service, and the Chicken Calone I ordered, their version of Deburgo, which my sister agreed was literally olive oil. I also would suggest they put descriptions on the menu, but that is how I am sure it's been the many years they have been in business. Just hard when the service is already lacking....Our waitress maybe was new or overwhelmed, but she forgot drinks and disappeared quite often. Another table I watched her take so long to even greet them...honestly if I was them, I would have left. The onion rings were really good, thing and crispy, the breading stuck to the rings and didn't fall off. If I was craving chicken parm, I would go back here over other places in DSM. Huge portions and for the price $13, definitely cannot be beat. I would go back and order something different next time, and maybe not on a Saturday night to see if the service is a little better.

Food and waitstaff were fantastic. Nikki out waitress was outstanding and the food is something your Grandma would make (but in a good way!) Huge portions, full of flavor, the onion rings straws were fantastic, plus the soup, salad, and bread had me full almost prior to the main course. Chicken Parmigiana was on point, it takes a little while as the entire dish is set in the oven to cook but comes out steaming hot. The decor is slightly outdated but does remind me of an classic steakhouse in Chicago! Great prices, will be back!

Old-school Italian Steakhouse... The food was very good. I had the T-bone and it hit the mark. The sides and all were very nice. Plenty of parking. Service is pleasant. I'll go again! Everyone seemed to be having a great time.

I have nothing but love for this place... My family has dined here for 50 years... And I've grown up eating here. It's a classic family owned Italian-American restaurant that's boasts a satisfying selection of great comfort food! Food and drink here has always been affordable and consistant... Highlights include their "Special Steak" which is a nice beef tenderloin... Prime Rib... Fried Shrimp...Various pasta dishes..great appetizers like fried chicken livers and onion rings. Most meals come with sides of salad and baked potato and a small dish of the BEST spaghetti I have ever had... I just love it here and will continue coming until they or I cease to exist... How's that for a recomendation!

Our group went for our regular night of dining out. The other couple thought the meals were ok. My wife didn't like hers and I thought my lasagna could have been a little warmer. Lots of food but not the best italian we've had. We won't put it down but we decided this was a one and done night. Des Moines has some really great places to eat so why accept just ok food. I do have to say the waitress was really good.

Last of the great Italian supper clubs. Everytime I go here I feel like I'm being transported back in time - to when I was just a elementary school kid and my parents would bring me to Riccelli's for a fancy dinner. Many, many good, fond memories. The food is above par. I've had everything from veal parm, to the Italian liver n onions n peppers. Just some of the best I've ever tasted. You can't go wrong no matter what you choose fromthe menu.

I'll start with the positive...the onion rings are outstanding and you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't order some. I don' care how many are in your party, you are probably OK ordering a Small. 6 of us ordered a large and we still had some left over. The food is actually pretty good. The portions are huge and can easily be split between a few people. The eggplant parm is my go-to dish. Very tasty. there are some things that are pretty annoying though, the place is in desperate need of a remodel. It looks very dingy and dirty inside - like it hasn't been touched since the early 80's. On the one hand, it's sort of charming, but on the other, it's gross. The lady who works the front register has probably been doing it for 40 years. This is a restaurant where you pay her on the way out and many times she's off helping a server or doing something else, so there's a huge line in front of people waiting to pay and people waiting to be seated. Not every efficient. Also, their wine selection is a joke. I get it, we're at a reasonably priced restaurant in Des Moines, Iowa, but a decent Italian place should have more than boxed wine, especially when there's a full bar.

Good, homemade Italian food. Friendy and family owned. Been open for 50ish years. I like that many Riccellis actually work there. I've had the chicken calome and cavetelli. Both were very good. Onion rings are super great. Everything fresh and homemade. Really good red sauce

Very good. Had the Chicken Calone. Had onion rings as well. A little outdated but so is St. Peter's.

Had dinner here on Saturday November 30, 2013. Yes the decor is vintage, but that's how they roll. It's old school and I love it. We started with drinks and our waitress was quick to serve us. We ordered onion rings and chicken livers for appetizers. The onion rings are sliced very thin, they were hot, crunchy and delicious. The livers were hot and very good. I ordered the Ravioli with Sausage. The portion was generous and it was hot and tasty. Will definitely get that again. My companions both got the filet. They came with a side of spaghetti and baked potato. I got a bite of one of the filets and it was perfect! Will get that next time! The sauce on my ravioli had a rich, complex flavor that can only be accomplished by building from specific ingredients and technique. That flavor and texture cannot be achieved from a can. I live in Michigan and travel to the area a couple times a year. I have been fortunate enough to eat in some very high end restaurants in the U.S. and abroad. This was my 5th time dining here and I can only say I wish I lived close enough to eat here a lot more often! It's not pretentious, it's real!

One of my favorite restaurants in Des Moines. If you want old school italian food this is the place to go. I've been going here since I was a teenager and have ordered the lasagna and chicken parm but I usually order the chicken colone. This is breaded chicken in garlic oil, soo good. Dinner comes with a salad, decent with really good dressings. You also get a side of spaghetti, which I really enjoy as an extra flavor and the sauce is really good. The atmosphere of this place is pretty different than other restaurants. It's a time warp when you walk in. Very red colored decor with mobster posters on the wall! I think it's awesome. The owners are getting up there. The older woman who seats you is one of the grumpiest people i've ever met but that just makes the place genuine haha. She'll crack a smile at you if you say something nice about the food here though. During dinner you can hear some of the cooks and the son of the grumpy old lady owner in the back getting firey! Totally authentic italian family running this place. I love it and it's consistent every time I eat here. Very good!

I was surprised by this place. Got dragged here, and after looking at the miserable shape the structure, parking lot, and surrounding area is in, I expected the worst. But the service was pretty good, and so was the lasagna. Soup and salad however left much to be desired - soup broth was as bland as anything I've tasted, and salad dressing was 99% mayonnaise. But to be honest I would expect that in this part of the country. But the lasagna was surprisingly tasty.

Was very reluctant to try this restaurant based on some pretty poor reviews from other websites, but was actually pleasantly surprised. Yes, the outside & inside of the building are dated, but I actually found it quite charming--it had a Goodfella's kind of feel. The hostess was the owner and she just looked old & tired out--just s little on the crabby side but not obnoxiously so--it just added to the dining experience. Our waiter was a super nice young man who is the owner's grandson. He was prompt and very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Now for the food. We ordered the "small" order of onion rings ( more like onion strings) and they were big enough to feed at least 4 people--they were very good. I had the chicken parm & my husband had the chicken calone (breaded, fried chicken breast with a garlic, oil sauce) both very good. Our food was piping hot and tasted fresh. I've had better red sauce, but it did not taste like it came from a can like another reviewer said, just a little less seasoned than what I like. The prices are about middle-of-the-road, appropriate for what we ordered. I'm pretty hard to impress and I would def come here again. .
